What characteristics do top-level WELS leaders have in common?

-- Has every Synod president been a prep school grad?

-- Has every District president been a prep school grad?

-- Based on history, if a pastor serves in a foreign mission field then returns to the U.S., is he more likely or less likely to become a District president or Synod president?

One year ago we were in the throes of area delegate conferences prelude to our summer 2007 WELS National Convention as doom-saying and soothsaying ran rampant. Hot topics during the spring and summer of 2007 were the Synod's national budget crisis and ministerial education. What did you get out of the 2007 convention season?

Many, like I, discovered and digested the Prep School Study Committee #2 (PSSC-2) Report. The Report was two years in the making in that the Committee first analyzed ...

Last night I had the pleasure of listening to a live performance by the touring Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary choir -- 50 strong voices raised in moving praise of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The performance was fantastic, as usual.

As I studied the faces of those eager young men, each having dedicated so much of their lives already to train for work in God's church, and each face and hairline transitioning gradually and some prematurely to middle-age, looking more and more like their ...

Do our WELS Lutheran schools teach students to be leaders and managers in the church and in the world at-large?

Although our WELS schools emphasize team sports, I do not see lessons learned on the sports field carrying over to other applications.

While our pastors and teachers seem to excel working by themselves in lonely outposts where no collaboration is required, teamwork is a weakness. In my experience, I've seen dual pastor experiments end in failure and team teaching arrangements ...

Do we in WELS assure excellence in doctrine?

A student asked why God allowed Hurricane Katrina to damage New Orleans, and a school parent heard the WELS teacher respond, "Because God protects only those he loves." The parent didn't think that the answer was good Christian theology, so the parent asked the pastor, and the pastor brushed the parent aside invoking the rule that laity may not question MLC grads.

So how DO we assure excellence in doctrine?

Perhaps an MLC historian could shed light on how teacher training length & content has changed over the years.

Some WELS teachers retiring now (after decades of faithful service) received their training during the Synod "emergency" of the 1960s when teacher training was shortened to 2.5 years to cope with the "emergency."

Contrasting 1960s-era training, we now have ECE training at MLC runnning 5 full years.

Other factors over the years include: DMLC ...

The idea of a WELS High School Matrix began during the 2007 WELS Convention when it became known that there was no WELS high school equivalent of the annual Statistical Report for congregations. The WELS SAB (Parish Schools & Ministerial Education) is considering creating an official WELS High School Matrix; nevertheless, to get the ball rolling, there is a WELS High School Matrix worksheet posted at Google Docs.

If you are connected with a WELS High School, please ask someone knowledgable ...
